Dr. Nagat El Demerdash on Cultivating the Dreams of Future Doctors
Nagat El Demerdash, MD, PhD, is ever impressed that the students in her lectures and labs are only 15 or 16 years old. As part of the Summer at Hopkins Medical School Intensive course, which she has taught for the past several summers, El Demerdash brings both expertise and exuberance to her young audience.
“Every year I am more surprised by the students,” said El Demerdash, who arrived at Johns Hopkins as a post-doctorate fellow in 2017– via her native Egypt and her education in Spain at Autonomous University of Madrid and an international program that also included the University of Oslo in Norway. She is now a clinical fellow in the Hopkins’ School of Medicine’s neurology department and will soon begin her residency there, specializing in interventions to prevent strokes. “They are so knowledgeable and ask smart questions. They know the medical terms, and they are very mature and responsible, interested and excited. I struggle to call them kids because they are very smart, and we build a really nice relationship in a very short time.”
After providing morning lectures on topics ranging from the central nervous system to the immunology, cardiology, and genetics to about 24 students, El Demerdash spends afternoons with students in the lab, using a pig model to teach organ dissections. They practice suturing and performing blood typing. She also provides training for a larger group – usually more than 100 students – on the patient interview process, preparing them to present themselves professionally, maintain eye contact, ask pertinent questions, take detailed notes, and effectively communicate with the patient to discuss the next steps and plans for treatment. The simulation allows students to practice with both cooperative and challenging patients.
“Teaching has always been an area of interest for me, and I enjoy the Summer at Hopkins course because it gives me an opportunity to do something fun in medicine during my time off,” said El Demerdash, who has received incredible feedback from her appreciative students who enroll in the course from around the world. “This is a great opportunity for students to learn about what to expect from medical school or who want to work in the medical profession. It is the rule of my class to be respectful and attentive, and, in exchange, you will find in me someone who is understanding and invested in your growth and success. When I want to have joy, I sign up to teach in Summer at Hopkins.”
