Advanced Spanish I - AS.210.311
Pre-College students & Undergraduate students May 30 - June 30 OnlineThis course is a comprehensive study of the Spanish language focused on the continuing development of students’ communicative abilities and their knowledge of Hispanic cultures. Students will expand their use of basic structures of Spanish with a special emphasis on more difficult grammatical and vocabulary aspects, and further improve both their oral and written skills. Students will sharper their critical thinking skills and listening abilities utilizing movies and written texts. This course combines an extensive use of an online component with class participation and three exams. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have acquired extended complex language tools that facilitate proficiency in Spanish and its use in various professional contexts. There is no final exam. May not be taken satisfactory/unsatisfactory. No new enrollments permitted after the third class session.

Botanical Painting in Watercolor and Gouache - AS.371.129
Undergraduate students May 30 - June 30 OnlineThis introductory painting class is an exploration of the ways watercolor and designer gouache are used together to paint organic materials representationally. We’ll study the difference between botanical painting and illustration and trace how women specifically have shaped this genre of art through history. Students will learn techniques from both observation and invention and artwork will be assessed in weekly group critiques. Course includes demonstrations, short readings and a research paper about a botanical artist.
Calculus I (Physical Sciences & Engineering) - AS.110.108

Includes analytic geometry, functions, limits, integrals and derivatives, polar coordinates, parametric equations, Taylor's theorem and applications, infinite sequences and series. Some applications to the physical sciences and engineering will be discussed, and the courses are designed to meet the needs of students in these disciplines.
A flexible weekly schedule accommodates all student schedules and time zones, and courses include pre-recorded lectures, notes, and interactives to help students learn the material. Calculus of Several Variables. Calculus of functions of more than one variable: partial derivatives, and applications; multiple integrals, line and surface integrals; Green's Theorem, Stokes' Theorem, and Gauss' Divergence Theorem.

The class will meet for ten weeks and will follow the deadlines for that term for add/drop/withdraw and grade changes.This course examines the psychological disorders that are usually first diagnosed prior to adulthood. Some of the specific disorders that will be discussed are Attention-Deficit and Disruptive Behavior Disorders, Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Learning Disorders and Intellectual Disability.Students will become familiar with various diagnoses, etiologies, and methods of treatment. Climate Fiction and Capitalist Accumulation - AS.060.186
Pre-College students & Undergraduate students July 3 - August 4 OnlineThis course will examine the relationship between capitalist accumulation, the climate crisis, and contemporary climate fiction. What is capitalist accumulation? How has this process led to the contemporary climate crisis? What ideas constitute its ideological apparatus? How do contemporary climate fictions critique and/or amplify these ideas? With these questions as our point of departure, we will read a selection of contemporary climate fiction alongside excerpted works of history, climate science, and critical theory. Through this examination, we will develop an understanding of how contemporary climate fictions participate in climate change discourse, politics, and the social struggles that both underpin and are exacerbated by climate change. By the end of the course, students will be able to define capitalist accumulation, its politics, and its ideas, as well as climate fiction. Students will analyze how climate fictions critique and amplify capitalist ideology and politics. Students will develop insights into how climate fictions perform this work at the levels of both content and form. Finally, through critical and creative writing projects that engage, reconsider, and respond to the course readings, students will refine critical thinking and writing skills.

An emphasis will be on applications to prepare students for future courses like Precalculus or Statistics. Pre-College students & Undergraduate students May 30 - June 30 OnlineThis course, which will cover approximately 200 years beginning in the late 16th century, provides a fresh look at arguably one of the most critical periods in the history of science – the so-called ‘Scientific Revolution’ – through the lens of colonial studies. It will address classic topics within the history and philosophy of science, such as the rise of observational epistemologies and the globalization of scientific knowledge. By connecting these philosophical concepts to the colonial contexts in which they arose, it will use tools from social history, economic history, and art history. Ultimately, it seeks not only to enrich students’ perspectives on the history of science, but also to inspire them to think about the connections between science and society across time.
Comedic Storying for Page and Screen (W) - AS.061.265
Pre-College students & Undergraduate students May 30 - June 30 OnlineA workshop devoted to the art and science of a funny story well told. Students will analyze comic fiction, film, and classic television, and create their own short, comic works. They'll learn the basics of screenplay format and scene design, and hone close observation and critical thinking skills. This course satisfies the Film and Media Studies screenwriting requirement.
A writing-intensive (W) course is one in which students complete at least 20 pages of finished writing, distributed over multiple assignments, usually 3 or 4 papers, throughout the term. For Johns Hopkins University undergraduates, Introduction to Screenwriting counts towards the 12 required credit hours of writing intensive courses.
Computer Ethics - EN.601.104
Undergraduate students June 5 - July 28 OnlineStudents will examine a variety of topics regarding policy, legal, and moral issues related to the computer science profession itself and to the proliferation of computers in all aspects of society, especially in the era of the Internet. The course will cover various general issues related to ethical frameworks and apply those frameworks more specifically to the use of computers and the Internet. The topics will include privacy issues, computer crime, intellectual property law -- specifically copyright and patent issues, globalization, and ethical responsibilities for computer science professionals. Work in the course will consist of weekly assignments on one or more of the readings and a final paper on a topic chosen by the student and approved by the instructor.
