New Experiences Enriched Summer at Hopkins Students in 2025
Published November 18, 2025
Inquisitive and enthusiastic pre-college and undergraduate students from 51 countries embraced a unique opportunity for learning and engagement as part of Johns Hopkins University’s Summer at Hopkins in 2025. Enrolling in-person and online, the group increased by 23 percent, including a significant growth of like-minded, academically driven pre-college students who immersed themselves in diverse courses across multiple disciplines. The fast-paced college-level learning experience also packed in the fun.
“Johns Hopkins is a place where problems are solved and solutions are identified,” said Owen Hooper, executive director of summer and intersession programs. “We work to provide our students with a personalized experience that will help them make decisions about their own academic journeys. We want them to invest their individual talents, strengths, and values in subjects they are passionate about and turn those investments into purpose. We believe that the experiences the students take away from Summer at Hopkins programming helps to brighten and focus their own light for their path forward.”
Creative Course Offerings Delivered by Exceptional Faculty
While the popular Pre-College Programs – medical school intensive, anatomy, introduction to surgery, and lab research – continued to be sought after, new in-demand offerings in math foundations for artificial intelligence and big data also attracted large numbers.
“Summer at Hopkins students reap the reward of rich instruction from JHU professors, teaching assistants, post-doctoral and graduate students who bring their expertise and energy to the courses,” Hooper said. “Additionally, the faculty have the opportunity to engage in small settings with these students and to experience their undeniable level of excitement. It is an interaction that is truly enjoyable and beneficial for both demographics.”
Next Generation Scholars Academy
2025 saw the launch of the Next Generation Scholars Academy, an experience designed for rising high school juniors and seniors that combines undergraduate coursework, curated programming, and the incomparable experience of living on campus for five weeks. Some 70 students took advantage of the opportunity to complete two undergraduate courses as well as an exclusive one-credit course focused on personal and college success. Like all other pre-college students, they also enjoyed experiencing dorm life on the Homewood campus, social outings in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. metro area, and invaluable exposure to new experiences, new people, and new cultures.
“Our Next Generation Scholars benefited from a partnership with the JHU Undergraduate Admissions Office and the University Writing Program, which helped the students better understand the college landscape and garnering valuable feedback on their personal statements,” Hooper said. “These insights are crucial in the college decision and admissions processes. We also are incorporating a stronger focus on community involvement and experiential learning opportunities as another way for these students to stand out on their college applications.”
Summer Term Undergraduate Courses
Undergraduate students and qualified pre-college students took advantage of a robust catalog of in-person and Summer Term credit-earning courses, advancing through five weeks of on-campus courses and five, six, eight, or 10 weeks of online options.
“Our staff works tirelessly to support students in-person and across almost every time zone around the globe,” Hooper said. “We recognize that every student and every family circumstance is different. We want to ensure that we are creating courses, yes, where students can encounter the rigor and academic excellence that is synonymous with Johns Hopkins, but also spaces where they can feel accepted and included. We are here to holistically champion and celebrate students, provide them with an exceptional experience, and help them find a way forward.”
